Who I Am

Hello to everyone. I’m Russ Saltzman, pastor of Ruskin Heights Lutheran Ministry, and I’ve been a pastor since 1980, previously serving congregations in Omaha, Chicago, Charleston, SC, and central Missouri. I grew up in Olathe, KS, so being in the Kansas City area is a homecoming of sorts.

At different points in my life, prior to becoming a pastor, I was – somewhat in order – a newspaper reporter, a deputy secretary of state of Kansas, a newspaper editor, a freelance writer, and a press secretary for a U.S. congressman. What can I say? Honest work was hard to come by those years. Do a “google” on my full name – Russell E. Saltzman - and some of the stuff I’ve written will pop up.

I have seven children, four boys and three girls - and of them: two are adopted, one is married, two are in the U.S. Army, two still at home, one still in college. Don’t bother trying to add them up; I’ve tried and it doesn’t work. My wife, Dianne, teaches 4th grade in one of the area school districts.

What I Do

I enjoy being a pastor. It’s the only work I’ve done that absorbs all my energy, and does it in a way that nothing else has ever matched. I don’t thump the Bible when I preach, but I do try to make the story of the Gospel – “good news” is what “gospel” means – come alive with all the inherent vibrancy of the message. And as I understand the Gospel, the good news from God is the revelation of His unfailing love for humanity. No more than that, and certainly nothing less. This is what I aim to tell every time I preach. Every Sunday, I try to say something like this: If you want to know who God is, what He is like, what sort of character and personality He might have, and what He wants for you and from you, then look at the life of Jesus for answers.

Your Invitation

If you’re seeking something genuine and something far larger than yourself, well, come visit with us next Sunday. You may find exactly what God wants you to find.
